Standard sizes for blocks are 3,20–3,60 m x 1,60–2,00 m x 1,20–1,60 m. It is possible to purchase blocks directly from some quarries. However, it is more usual that blocks are purchased from a dedicated wholesalers.

For larger project where multi blocks are needed it is important that the blocks required are numbered and derive from the same part of the quarry.It is normal practice that the architect/ project manager visits the block wholesaler to view the material before procurement. However, for the untrained eye a block of unfinished stone means very little, therefore it is important that a specialist attends due to the high risk of fissures and colour variants.
